This hands on workshop introduces the fundamentals of

You will learn:
- Which plants and flowers produce strong, colourfast natural dyes
- How to extract and work with plant-based dyes

During the session, you will receive a 100g Merino wool skein to
dye using botanical dyes and mineral modifiers.
You’ll also experiment with botanical inks on paper and experience the magic of colour shifting in real time.

BOTANICA

An Art Retreat with a focus on Natural dye is happening  21st to 23rd  August, 2026 .

A guided retreat looking into creative process and embodiment, natural dyeing and intuitive stitching. An invitation to quiet the mind, to unwind the body, a connection to place.

Your journey:

After your arrival on Friday and settling into your room we will connect for a fireside dinner and retire early for a cosy nights rest.

In the morning,  we will enjoy and country style breakfast and move into the studio where the creativity begins...

Saturday Morning:

Somatic movement and creative play. Starting with light movement and a nervous system reset, lead by breath. You are encouraged to move out of your head and into your body. Creative play, you will be gently lead through creativity as a means of self-expression. Using botanical inks on watercolour paper, gentle prompts and collage as a tool for inner exploration.

A break for lunch and then back into the studio.

Saturday Afternoon:

A deeper look into the southern hemisphere’s diverse dye plants. A workshop on how to dye embroidery thread with natural dyes. You will dye your on cotton skein. At the end of the day,  you will again retire to your room for quiet time to later join everyone for another delicious fireside dinner and reflection on the processes of the day.

Sunday morning:

A moment of reflection, plant allies and intuitive stitching.

We end the morning with a long table lunch. Participants are welcome to retire back to their room for an afternoon nap, because  Sundays call for that, before heading back home.

Where you will stay:

Your stay will be at the creatively inspired and beautifully decorated Stoep guest house, a late 19th-century home situated in the heart of the Overberg village of Napier. Filled with art, colour, collected objects and thoughtful details, Stoep offers a warm and welcoming space designed to inspire rest, creativity and connection.

The house opens onto a large terraced garden with chickens and a flourishing vegetable garden. A quiet, protected terrace leads off the lounge and dining room area, the perfect spot to read, relax or enjoy a peaceful moment between workshops. The front stoep is one of the most memorable spaces of the house, where you can sit high above the road enjoying a morning coffee or evening sundowner while taking in the charm and rhythm of the village below.

In winter, wood-burning fires, thick duvets, heated blankets and colourful Basotho blankets create a wonderfully cosy country atmosphere.

We have four guest rooms, all with their own en suite bathrooms. Two of the rooms are located on the front stoep, while the other two larger rooms are situated inside the house. All bedding is 100% cotton, ensuring comfort throughout your stay.

One of the rooms can be shared, otherwise you can enjoy a luxuriously large king-size bed all to yourself. Stoep is also home to two friendly dogs and two much-loved cats who are very much part of the relaxed country charm of the house.
